Botox vs. Fillers: Understanding the Difference and Which Is Right for You
Botox and fillers are two of the most popular treatments in aesthetics, but they work in completely different ways. If you're exploring your options and aren't sure which one is right for you, understanding the basics will help you have a more productive conversation with your provider.
Botox is a neuromodulator. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles — the lines that form when you make facial expressions like frowning, squinting, or raising your eyebrows. Common treatment areas include forehead lines, the "11s" between your brows, and crow's feet. The results are a smoother, more relaxed appearance that typically lasts three to four months.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injectable gels — most commonly made of hyaluronic acid — that add volume beneath the skin. Fillers are used to restore lost volume in the cheeks, smooth nasolabial folds (the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth), enhance lips, and address hollowing under the eyes. Rather than relaxing muscles, fillers physically fill in areas that have lost structure over time.
Here's a simple way to think about it: if the concern is a line that appears when you move your face, Botox is likely the right choice. If the concern is a line or hollow that's present even when your face is at rest, fillers may be the better solution. Many patients benefit from both.
The treatment experience is similar for both. Injections are done with fine needles, take roughly 15 to 30 minutes, and require minimal downtime. Botox results develop over a few days, while filler results are typically visible immediately.
At Oli at Home, our board-certified PAs and NPs are trained in both neuromodulators and dermal fillers. During your in-home consultation, your provider will assess your facial anatomy, discuss your goals, and recommend a treatment plan tailored to you. There's no one-size-fits-all approach in aesthetics, and the right answer depends on your unique concerns.
Not sure where to start? That's perfectly fine. Book a consultation with Oli at Home and let one of our providers help you build a plan that makes sense for where you are today and where you want to be.
